Botanica VI — Geodia
Futuropia Cities — Botanica Series
About the work
A planet has landed in the garden. It is staying.
Geodia is the most cosmically scaled work in the Botanica series a geodesic sphere of such formal perfection that it reads simultaneously as architectural structure, as celestial body, and as the largest seed in the Botanica universe, suspended at the precise moment before it opens. The triangulated surface catches and distributes light with the mathematical precision of a form that has been optimised not by a designer but by geometry itself the same geometry that appears in the structure of viruses, in the compound eye of a dragonfly, in the carbon lattice of a buckyball. Inside, two small trees stand in quiet defiance of the scale surrounding them, their presence transforming the cosmic into the intimate.
Below, organic pavilions spread outward in low curved forms petals that have opened to receive the sphere, sépales that anchor it to the earth without quite touching it. Gestural lines explode from the base of the composition in every direction, like the energy released by something that has arrived from a very long distance and is only now, slowly, coming to rest.
Di Nicolantonio draws here from the deepest lineage of visionary architecture Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes, the Biosphère of Montréal, the Eden Project domes but arrives somewhere those precedents did not go: a structure that belongs simultaneously to the botanical and the astronomical, that makes no distinction between what grows from the earth and what falls from the sky.
In the Futuropia universe, Geodia is the planetarium and astronomical garden of Verdania the building where citizens go to remember that the city they live in is also, always, a point in space.
