Chrysalis
About the work
She is not yet what she is becoming.
Chrysalis is the most biologically unsettling work in DN — WARDROBE a figure in which the garment has ceased to be an object and become a process. From the structured precision of the upper body visor sealed, skull clean, shoulders resolved the tenue descends into something that defies the vocabulary of fashion entirely. Elliptical openings perforate the surface like cells dividing. Organic forms coil and unfurl at the hem with the unhurried logic of growth rather than construction. The fabric, if it can still be called that, appears to be alive or at minimum, to be in the process of deciding what it wants to be.
Chrysalis imagines the garment as organism: a second skin that evolves in response to its environment, that carries within its structure the memory of what it was and the potential of what it will become.
The figure wears this transformation with complete composure. The visor is down. The expression, invisible, is presumably one of patience. She has been here before in the moment between forms and she knows it resolves.
In DN — WARDROBE, Chrysalis is the conceptual counterpart to Seraphine: one the transformation in progress, the other its completion. Together they define the collection's deepest argument that fashion, at its most visionary, is not about dressing the body but about reimagining what a body can become.
