Estuary
About the work
At the edge of the city, form begins to dissolve.
In Estuary, architecture surrenders its vertical ambitions and spreads horizontally across the composition like water finding its level. A central mass rises with the curved momentum of a wave mid-break organic apertures piercing its body, vegetation claiming its crown while smaller structures orbit at ground level, connected by pathways that read more like riverbeds than roads. A perfect sphere anchors the right of the composition: still, complete, planetary.
This is the threshold between the built and the elemental. Di Nicolantonio proposes a city that does not end, it gradually becomes something else. The architecture thins at its edges, loosens its grip, and releases into landscape with the quiet inevitability of a river meeting the sea.
Of all the works in the Futuropia Cities series, Estuary is the most contemplative. It does not ask to be admired. It asks to be inhabited slowly.
