About the work
Transformation does not always announce itself.
In Nova, Di Nicolantonio draws the most serene figure in The Augmented series a three-quarter portrait in which the technology has stopped competing with the human and simply become part of it. An orbital cranial system frames the face with the quiet authority of something that has always been there: a circular AI eye embedded at the centre, its concentric rings calibrated and precise, surrounded by a helmet architecture that flows into the hairline without seam or scar. Behind it all, hair moves freely uncontrolled, organic, alive.
The expression holds something rare in this series: peace. Not the stillness of Kyumi-1 waiting in silence, not the intensity of Vector locked on target, not the fragmentation of Static under overload. Peace. The particular composure of someone who has been through the transformation and arrived, intact, on the other side.
The AI eye does not dominate here. It observes quietly, continuously, processing the invisible layers of a connected world while the face that carries it remains entirely, recognisably human. This is the most optimistic vision Di Nicolantonio has yet committed to paper: augmentation not as disruption, but as completion.
In astrophysics, a nova is the moment a star releases its maximum energy not in destruction, but in becoming more fully itself.
