Vessel
About the work
She is still here. Half of her, at least.
In Vessel, Di Nicolantonio draws the most intimate frontier in the Futuropia universe not between cities and nature, not between past and future, but between a face and itself. The right side is human: soft skin, parted lips, a gaze that carries something unmistakably interior. The left side has been remade.
At the centre of that transformation: the eye.
Encased within concentric rings of precision-engineered iris, the left eye is no longer an organ of perception it is a system. A sensor array capable of processing what the biological eye cannot see: data streams, thermal signatures, electromagnetic fields, the invisible architectures of a connected world. It does not blink. It does not dream. It computes. And yet, framed by the same face, aligned with the same gaze, it looks with an attention that feels, unsettlingly, like understanding.
This is the eye that sees you back.
The right side holds: soft skin, parted lips, a gaze that carries something unmistakably interior. The dividing line runs straight down the centre of the face with the precision of a surgical decision not imposed, but chosen. The expression holds no grief, no resistance. Only the particular stillness of someone who has already crossed a threshold and found, on the other side, a version of themselves they prefer.
Vessel is the defining work of The Augmented series. A portrait of the moment artificial intelligence stops being a tool and becomes part of the self.
