Zephyr
DN — WARDROBE — Collection 02
About the work
She moves the way light moves without effort, without resistance, without leaving a mark on the air she passes through.
Zephyr is the most delicate work in DN — WARDROBE a figure drawn with a restraint so precise it reads as a deliberate act of subtraction. Where Sovereign exploded and Chrysalis proliferated, Zephyr withholds. The line is fine, the form barely resolved, the silhouette emerging from the page with the tentative authority of something that has chosen to be almost invisible. A swept wing extends to the right cape, blade, or atmospheric phenomenon, it is impossible to say with certainty, and that uncertainty is the point.
The face carries the most openly emotional expression in the entire collection eyes half-closed, head tilted, the particular quality of someone who is listening to something inaudible. Not processing. Not computing. Listening. The collar rises softly around the jaw; the bodysuit traces the torso in lines that suggest movement already in progress, as if the figure were mid-flight and the drawing caught her between one moment and the next.
Di Nicolantonio works here with the lightest touch in his repertoire the felt-tip pen held at its furthest extension from the nib, the line finding its own way across the surface with minimal direction. The result is a work that rewards sustained attention: the more you look, the more the figure resolves.
In DN — WARDROBE, Zephyr is the breath between Advent and whatever arrives next. The pause that makes the collection possible.
