Aqua IV — Leviathan
Futuropia Cities — Aqua Series
About the work
It has always been here. The city grew up around it.
Leviathan is the most monumental work in the Aqua series a building of such mass and presence that it reads less like a structure and more like a geological event. A great hemispherical shell dominates the composition face-on, its surface perforated by openings of every order: rectangular windows flush with the skin, oval apertures that suggest the breathing holes of a marine creature, arched ground-level entrances wide enough to swallow entire crowds, cantilevered balconies projecting outward like fins testing the air. To the left, a ramped access way curves upward with the unhurried logic of something that has been receiving arrivals for a very long time.
There is no elegance here in the conventional sense no slenderness, no transparency, no gesture toward lightness. Leviathan is all mass, all presence, all permanence. It sits on the ground the way a whale sits in the ocean with the absolute authority of something that has found its element and has no intention of leaving it.
Di Nicolantonio draws here with the boldest line in the Aqua series the hatching dense and directional, the contour of the shell resolved in a single continuous arc that contains everything within its curve. This is a building you approach from a distance, that grows larger as you near it, that you understand only when you are standing beneath it and the scale finally registers.
In the Futuropia universe, Leviathan is the grand maritime terminal of Verdania — the building where the sea route ends and the city begins, where travellers arriving by water first understand what kind of place they have come to. It is the last thing you see when you leave. It is the first thing you remember when you return.
