You are inside the tree. Look up.

Within is the most radical work in the Arboria series and the only work in the entire Futuropia Cities universe drawn from a subjective point of view. Every other drawing in the collection shows you the city from outside, from a respectful distance, from the position of someone who has arrived to observe. Within puts you somewhere else entirely: inside the trunk, looking upward, the branches spreading above you in a canopy of structural forms that simultaneously reads as architecture and as the underside of the largest tree you have ever stood beneath.

The branches fan outward from the central mass with the organic logic of a real tree asymmetric, unplanned, each one finding its own direction and discovering, in that direction, a place to put a home. Oval habitations are nestled into the forks and hollows, their fenestration barely visible, their presence suggesting inhabitation rather than announcing it. Below, a domed structure closes the composition at ground level the root chamber, the heart of the system, the place where everything begins.

Di Nicolantonio floods the composition with the most generous watercolour green in the entire Arboria series it bleeds into the branches, pools in the hollows, marks every surface where light and leaf coincide. The drawing does not describe a view. It immerses you in one.

In the Futuropia universe, this is the view that every resident of The Grove knows by heart the one you see when you step outside your door in the morning and tilt your head back and understand, again, that you live inside something alive.
