Botanica II — Lotus
Futuropia Cities — Botanica Series
About the work
Every civilisation has built toward the flower. This one became it.
Lotus is the most formally resolved work in the Botanica series a composition of such geometric completeness that it reads simultaneously as architectural drawing and botanical illustration, as building and blossom, as the plan of a city and the cross-section of a seed. Great ribbed petals open from a central mass of three inhabited spheres pistils scaled to the size of concert halls their surfaces traced with the structural grid lines of a building envelope that has learned its geometry from nature's most perfect form. At the base, elliptical satellite volumes settle into the ground like the outer sepals of a flower that has not yet fully opened.
Di Nicolantonio draws here with exceptional patience every petal surface rendered in parallel lines that follow the curve of the form with botanical precision, every structural intersection resolved with the care of someone who understands that in a composition this symmetrical, every detail is visible from every angle. The result is a work that rewards study: the longer you look, the more the building and the flower become indistinguishable.
In every great civilisation, the most sacred building has taken the form of a flower — the lotus temples of ancient India, the rose windows of Gothic cathedrals, the domed pavilions of Mughal architecture. Lotus places itself consciously in that lineage: a building that has understood that the highest function of architecture is not shelter but meaning, not enclosure but aspiration.
In the Futuropia universe, Lotus is the great civic temple of Verdania the building at the centre of everything, the one that was always going to be built, the one the city grew around.
