Arboria II — The Grove

About the work
The city did not clear the forest. It moved in.
In The Grove, Di Nicolantonio scales the Arboria vocabulary from the individual building to the inhabited district a complete urban quarter in which great futurist trees with sinuous, muscle-like trunks and spherical green canopies rise above a layered ground-level fabric of arcaded structures, curved walkways, and a sweeping viaduct that carries the city's movement through the composition without interrupting it. Small figures move at ground level, dwarfed by trunks that have the scale and authority of Gothic columns or ancient sequoias. The effect is the same: a space that makes you aware of your own size, and finds that awareness beautiful rather than threatening.
This is the most narratively complete work in the Arboria series a place you could walk into, get lost in, find a café beneath an arcade, look up through the canopy at a patch of sky and understand, without needing to be told, that this is one of the great cities of the world. The architecture is organic but the urbanism is precise: clear circulation, legible public space, the right relationship between enclosure and openness, between the scale of the tree and the scale of the human.
Di Nicolantonio draws here with the fluency of someone who has spent time thinking not just about what buildings look like but about what it feels like to live between them. The Grove is not a vision of the future. It is a memory of a place that does not yet exist but that you recognise, immediately and completely, as somewhere you have always wanted to be.
