Helix
About the work
Life has always been a spiral. Architecture is only now catching up.
In Helix, Di Nicolantonio draws the most structurally elegant work in the Futuropia Cities series a composition organised around the double logic of the helix: ascending, rotating, self-referential, endlessly generative. Spiralling walkways coil around a central vertical axis of bare structural columns; an oval loop suspends itself in the upper right with the self-contained authority of a closed system; terraced platforms stack to the right in horizontal layers that read like the cross-section of a living organism or a musical score.
The vegetation here is not incidental. Each tree is placed with the precision of a structural decision at the inflection point of every curve, at the threshold of every level change, as if the architects of Verdania understood that green is not decoration but punctuation, the breath mark in an architectural sentence that would otherwise run on without pause.
Di Nicolantonio draws from the deepest source in biology the double helix of DNA, the spiral phyllotaxis of plant growth, the helical structure of proteins — and translates it into the language of built form. Helix proposes that the city of the future will not be planned but sequenced, not designed but encoded, its growth following the same irreducible logic that governs every living system on the planet.
In the Futuropia universe, Helix is the scientific quarter of Verdania — where the research that built the Kyumi and Stella lineages was first conceived, where the boundaries between biology and engineering were first deliberately dissolved.
