About the work
This one was built for something specific.
In Vector, Di Nicolantonio moves away from the intimate vulnerability of the earlier Augmented portraits and draws a figure defined entirely by purpose. The cranial architecture is seamless a helmet that is no longer worn but grown, its panels flush against the skull, its systems integrated at the level of bone. At the temple, a circular AI eye dominates the composition: concentric targeting rings surrounding a triangular iris that reads less like a pupil and more like a reticle locked on acquisition.
The mouth and chin remain soft, human, unmodified. They are not a weakness. They are the only part of this figure that still needs to breathe.
This is augmentation in its most directed form not enhancement for the sake of experience, but precision engineering for the sake of mission. Di Nicolantonio draws here from the trajectory of current military and aerospace research: heads-up display integration, neural targeting systems, cognitive load distribution across human-AI interfaces. The science exists. The ethics are still being written. Vector draws the figure that arrives before the legislation does.
Of all the works in The Augmented series, this is the one that asks the hardest question: augmented toward what end, and by whose decision?
